Today is Blog Action Day 2008. The topic is POVERTY. It saddens me in a world of such abundance that there is a need for a day of this sort, but the need has likely never been greater in my lifetime.
As I’ve written before, hunger is real part of life nearly a billion people worldwide. The poorest 40 percent of the world’s population accounts for 5 percent of global income. The richest 20 percent accounts for three-quarters of world income. In 2007, in the United States alone, 37.3 million people were in poverty, up from 36.5 million in 2006. According to Share Our Strength, one in six American children is at risk for hunger. The problem isn’t going away and there is no magical cure for it.
The point of Blog Action Day is to change the conversation. So join me in checking out and commenting on the many bloggers around the world that are using their voice to advocate for this change. Many are donating funds for comments left, so do your part, it’s as easy as that.
You can find out more by visiting Blog Action Day‘s site. Join the ranks of people who are doing something to end this plague.
What can you do right now?
If you’re a blogger, don’t delay. Join in today’s efforts and post yourself!
Write your local, state and national representatives and demand that they make this a priority in their political agenda.
Donate your time, energy and funds to organizations that are working hands-on to solve the crisis – both locally and worldwide.
Check out the many resources listed at Blog Action Day for more ideas to get out there and get involved.
Leave a comment here. For every comment received my family will donate $2 (one for me and one for you!) to Share Our Strength to do real good in communities around the United States. I don’t care what you comment, just comment and help me change the conversation.
Thank you in advance for supporting me!

This is awesome, Amy. And so generous!
I saw PsychMamma tweeting about this, but didn’t get a chance to really learn about it. I’ll have to jump on the bandwagon next time around.
As always, I have such respect for your social conscience. You rock, girl.

Thank you for blogging this topic.
Having been poor as a child and watching my mother struggle. Knowing what burning hunger and sickness with out health care is like. I can honestly say it is a feeling I never want my child or any other child to experience. I think so many in out country take their smallest necessities for granted. If they even had a small taste of the desolation of poverty. I think they would be more compassionate more concerned. I might by naive, and I accept that. I can’t accept that these things can’t change.

Geez, woman. You’ve drawn me out of my no-comment bubble. But it’s for a good cause.

What a great post Amy. And such a wonderful gesture to donate for every comment. First I read psychmamma’s and now your post. Makes what I was going to post about this seem very, blah.

As a teacher, I’ve had kids in my class who were hungry, who actually didn’t get regular meals, who stole food from other kids’ backpacks. Seeing it firsthand has made me aware of the fact that (a) it’s really, really there and (b) you’re right, it’s not getting any better.
As a mother, there is nothing worse than imagining your own child going hungry. Or, for that matter, any person going hungry. . .
Thanks for doing this.

Green Me Alison
Hi! Thanks for doing this — I just saw your tweet, and I also just published my own post…linking poverty and inadequate health care. You’ve also inspired me to do my own bit — for every comment I receive on my below post, I will donate a canned or dried food item (like pasta) to the OUR Center, which is our local center for moms and families in need.

What a fantastic, interactive, personal way you have chosen to make a difference.
Thank you to you and your family for donating on my behalf!
As an employee for a local non-profit, I know how hunger is hitting regular, hard-working people just as much as it is hitting those coping with extreme poverty.
Together, we can all make a difference – and you’re proving it!

Hi, I’m Eric, the webmaster over at Share Our Strength. I didn’t want to comment yesterday because I thought it might be a little unfair, but I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate what you’ve done here. Thanks so very much for your generosity!

Is it too late to comment? I’m glad you posted about this. I was going to, but time got away from me. You know how that Time can be a real stinker.
Anywho, poverty sucks and God help us, Obama will be elected to help the poor in this country and around the world.
