Many of you have been following my weight loss progress over at Cincinnati Losers. I know I speak for all the losers when I tell you what an extra motivator it is to have your words of encouragement as we battle this demon.
A lot of people struggle every day with weight – whether they are trying to lose the weight or not, the extra pounds are a struggle. Climbing stairs, buying clothes, doctor’s visits, enjoying life – every aspect of your existence is affected when your weight is an issue.
In this country of plenty, where most of us have never known a day of hunger, obesity is the reality touching everyone. 1.6 BILLION people in the world are over-weight. 1.6 BILLION people eat too much on a regular basis, don’t get ample exercise and suffer the consequences of these unhealthy choices. It’s reached epidemic levels – I should know, I’m one of those people. For now.
As if in some bizarre parallel universe, almost a BILLION other people in the world don’t have enough to eat on a daily basis. This epidemic covers the spectrum of human existence: from U.S. children going to bed each night and heading off to school each morning with empty tummies, to devastating starvation killing thousands each day in third world nations.
And there, but for the grace of God, go any one of us.
A few years ago, a Seattle woman, Debbie Hugo decided to hit both epidemics head on. She was your typical Weight Watchers leader, working to inspire others to have the same success she had with the Weight Watchers program. In September, 2003, she decided to kick things up a notch.
Her plan was that for every pound or ounce that members lost, they would bring in the equivalent weight in food that would be donated to a local food bank. This was just the spark that her members needed to commit to weight loss and have the bonus of doing real good for their community. That first year, Hugo’s Members lost — and contributed, in food — about 3,000 pounds. And they’ve continued to lose and give in the years since.
WW headquarters heard about the amazing success of this local program and decided to launch it globally. On September 7th, Weight Watchers launched it’s first ever Lose for Good campaign. For every pound lost by Weight Watchers members between September 7th and October 18th, Weight Watchers will donate the equivalent poundage in food up to ONE MILLION DOLLARS to two charities combating hunger in the U.S. and worldwide. You can read more about those organizations here.
I’ve been in Weight Watchers a few times. My recent (and final because this time it’s gonna STICK!) effort began in January, slacked off in April and re-energized in August. On September 9th, inspired by this campaign, I bought a walking CD and I’ve been hitting the exercise hard. I don’t think I would have taken it to this next level had it not been for Lose for Good. I’ve lost 5.6 pounds since it began – my very best two week period EVER! That 5.6 pounds translates into milk for a month for 67 children! My flubber did that!? Amazing!
I want others to feel inspired and join me on this journey. Weight Watchers has generously given me two free three-month memberships to raffle off. You will have your choice between a traditional Weight Watchers membership or an online membership.
So if you’ve been thinking about getting off the couch and on with your life, leave a comment here telling me what part of YOUR life is affected by your weight and why you want to LOSE FOR GOOD and LOSE FOR GOOD. You have til October 1st at 11:59 pm EST. Winners will be randomly selected by that website random thinga-ma-gig. I’ll post the winners here on Thursday morning (10/2) and you can start doing it already!
I can’t wait to hear from you and become part of your cheerleading squad!

Way to GO AMY! That was quite a two week loss. Keep it up!
I’d rather someone else win the WW free membership, but just HAD to comment on what a wonderful program this is.
Seriously, I think if more people thought about it in such a way, the world’s hunger/obesity problem would be much more managable. It is better to give than to receive, yes?

All parts of my life are affected by my weight. My sex life, while still good, could be so much better. Being able to run and chase my 2yr old would be nice to do without having an asthma attack due to the excess baggage. And gosh dang it, it would be nice to go to functions and not be worried about what I’m going to where or constantly comparing myself to all the skinny, nice dress moms.

My health has been effected by my weight. My blood pressure is creeping up
I LOVE Weight Watchers, have lost weight with them after my pregnancies, but haven’t made it back this time around, and my son is going to be 3!

Physically I would like to do more, without getting out of breath. Mentally, I need the kick start that WW could give me to get motivated. I KNOW what I need to do, it’s a matter of just doing it.
I think it would improve my health and mood, therefore making a huge difference all the way around. I don’t wish to be “skinny”, just healthy and in shape.

I think the core thing that my weight affects is my self esteem. That branches out to affect my social life, my sex life, and my general attitude. I’d love for shopping for clothes to be easier and to just feel sexy again. What a great giveaway! You’re doing a fantastic job and are motivating me to do better. Thanks for being such a great role model!

Mine’s all a control thing– like I blogged about before. I’m wondering if I would get too OCD with WW points?

Losing weight has been (ahem) weighing heavily on my mind ever since I saw myself in some video interviews I did at BlogHer for Five Minutes for Mom. After the conference, I was actually a little relieved at the halfway okay photos I saw of myself, but all of that mediocre settling evaporated as soon as I saw my double chin in live action.
But that’s on a selfish level.
I truly want to lose weight because these extra pounds consistently sap my energy and keep me from playing with my toddler boys the way I know I can. This weight literally holds me back from being a better mom.
I’m all for giving Weight Watchers a shot. A good shot. So throw my name into that number generator thingy, too! Doing this for myself, my kids, and other people’s kids might be just the push I need.
My butt could feed a village.

Oh wow, I would *love* to win this. I keep thinking about trying weight watchers, but don’t want to commit to something that I may not like. So it would be great to be able to try it for free, and then choose to pay for it if it works!
Since I had my son, I’ve been overweight. I am reaching an unhealthy point, and I’d like to reverse this before it starts negatively affecting my health. And what an amazing way to lose weight it would be–healthily and having that weight loss contribute to hunger? Excellent!
Thanks

I struggle with yo-yo dieting. It’s a new thing for me.
I can’t stay motivated, I lack inspiration… I need help.
My DH is very into healthy eating and exercising… he exercises a lot… so when we “cheat” it doesn’t affect him as it does me. I want to be motivated to make heatlhy meals for the whole family. I want my kids to learn to make good, healthy choices.
thanks for the opportunity!

I have really always been overweight. The times I have been successful in losing/maintaining have been when I had great motivators: before my wedding 11 years ago, and then while pg and had gestational diabetes I was trying to control. My littlest is now 3 and I am the biggest I’ve been.
I know I need to have a better plan of attack, and I think WW would help with that. My health, my ability to keep up with the 3 kids and my own self-image would be impacted by my weight loss and lifestyle change. Most importantly, I think I would be a better role model for my kids and that would mean the world to me.
Thanks for making me put that into writing!

I have been overweight for a while now. I can’t seem to find the motivation to get the weight loss going. I know once I do, I will succeed. I
I have a young son who I want to be able to do more active things with. And we’re also wanting to have another baby. I know that I should be in better shape before another pregnancy. And also I’ll then have another child to keep up with.
I need to lose this weight and keep it off for myself and my family.

I hate the way I look and feel at this size. I hate finding clothes to wear. I hate looking at myself in the mirror. I hate that eating is so easy and exercise is so hard. But I need to do it. I need to get the weight off. I need to get over my lazy complacency and accepting the status quo and JUST DO IT!
Thanks for the chance to win!

I was on WW for about a year and lost over 50 pounds. Then I took a huge pay cut and had to quit. I was devastated. I have maintained my loss of all but 3-4 pounds, and have since quit smoking too, but have about 100 pounds still to lose and I am scared that I won’t get there. I would love the opportunity to go back to WW so I could get closer to my goal.

What an awesome giveaway! I have done weight watchers in the past, but we are now on a budget that is pretty tight. My best friend has lost over 70 pounds using the weight watchers system. It really seems to work for her. Thanks for offering the giveaway. I am about 100 pounds overweight and could really use the free passes. Thanks again!

My weight and my self-worth are tied to each other, sadly. The more I weigh, the less I value myself. I know my weight contributes to my depression, and I want to eliminate that variable in beating my depression.
I also don’t want my kids to have an overweight mom. I don’t want that to be the role model they learn eating and exercising habits from.
I lost 80 pounds at one point, keeping it off for two years before gaining more than half of it back from having children. At the time I used weight watchers and was very active. I want to lose 50 pounds this time, and I think with the right tools I can do it.

Amazing Greis...
My ENTIRE life is impacted by my weight. I feel pudgy and out of shape all of the time. I strggle walking up the 3 flights of stairs to get to my apartment. Heck, walking any sort of long distance leaves me winded and tired. I’m pretty pathetic and I’m ready to do somthing about it.

I am a teacher and feel that I am not a good role model being overweight. I’ve fluctuated over the years and although I know that I should be eating better and exercising, I don’t have any motivation. So I thought I would enter your contest and then I would have to be accountable and could get my weight down before the new year. Being physically fit is just as important as being mentally and spiritually fit.

Between July 2007 and May 2008, I lost 58 pounds through a liquid diet from a local hosptial and water fitness at our local Y. Since then, we’ve bought a condo and did the dreaded move… and the pounds have been creeping back. Luckily, the water fitness is still going strong and we’re shooting to be back at 5 times a week this week.
I’ve actually done Weight Watchers in four or five different states. It works best for me when I have a dynamic leader and/or I have “peeps” at the meeting. Without one of those two in place, it is way too easy to slide.

I just don’t know how to do it on my own. I think if I had someone to help me be accountable I could eat better and keep the weight off. Now I know that I don’t have a ton of extra weight, but I know that with my Fibro if I am at a healthy weight it will be easier on my joints and if I am doing well with the Fibro then I will be able to do more with my girls and husband. I will be more comfortable and it would be easier to find clothes that I like. I am in that in between land right now. Regular sizes don’t really fit right and the plus sizes are too big. I always hear great things about WW, so I may have to give it a try even if I don’t win.

I know that weight is a tough issue. I am would like to get married in the next year, but I dont even want to go into another bridal salon to have someone tell me none of the sample sizes will even come close to working. Its humiliating. I was always small (size 3-6) until a bad injury in college. Lots of inactivity due to 6 months in a cast, and then steroids to help the healing have landed me 50 extra pounds over the last 8 years. I feel like I want to do it but there is never support and any assistance. I feel like I am going at it along. Good luck on your journey. I read all the time to get ideas and see how you are doing.
Hopefully something like this will work, and on my tight budget, anything would be great.

Holy Shmoly I could totally use this! I have been exercising a lot more lately but I cannot seem to get the food thing going.
I followed the WW points system about 5 years ago and lost 28 lbs then. I know it’s changed a lot since then AND I’ve had 2 kids so I would love to have this to help jump start the loss of the 15 or 20 pounds that need to go for both my health and self asteem. Thanks SO much for the chance! : )

I have 4 boys…I need to lose 50 pounds! I’m tired all the time, and that affects the things I do. I’ve been trying to lose weight for a few years now, but it’s not coming off very easily! I need to lose this to feel better about myself, to keep myself in good health!

Honestly, I am not getting any younger. That being the case, weight likes to stay in places I would rather it not be. I have done WW a couple of times with great results. I want to get disciplined again and this would help.

And…ACTION! «
[...] As I’ve written before, hunger is real part of life nearly a billion people worldwide. The poorest 40 percent of the world’s population accounts for 5 percent of global income. The richest 20 percent accounts for three-quarters of world income. In 2007, in the United States alone, 37.3 million people were in poverty, up from 36.5 million in 2006. According to Share Our Strength, one in six American children is at risk for hunger. The problem isn’t going away and there is no magical cure for it. [...]
