Well, apparently I am not alone in my love obsession for Jon & Kate Plus Eight. That show is beyond addicting and as we all know, addiction loves company – remember Celebrity Rehab? Ah, that was a beaut, but I digress.
I discovered Jon & Kate during a Mother’s Day Marathon on TLC*. Now I have my DVR record each and every one that airs, lest I miss something in these wonderful lives. I’m never more than a click away from a fix. And it’s cheaper than my heroin, so there’s that.
For those of you unaware of the objects of my affection (sometimes I feel like I don’t even know you people anymore), Jon & Kate had TWINS in December of 2000 and SEXTUPLETS in May 2004. We get a sneak peak into what such numbers mean in terms of life – you know when they kick you out of the hospital with a goofy hat and best wishes? Highly entertaining. Amazingly insightful. And a constant reminder to take my birth control pill.
This is my small tribute to Kate, who I think will go down in history as one of the greatest mothers of all time. And not for the typical reasons, I mean sure she’s warm and loving and smart and affirming, but she is so real. In this realness is the WOW of this show.
Tonight I watched an older episode – the one where Aunt Jodi gives the three year olds bubble gum, you know that cheap, really sticky bubble gum? By the end of the day it is discovered (because they kept sticking to one another) that the children are covered in gum – Aunt Jodi might as well have rolled them in it. Their socks are thrown away. The clothes are ruined. One of the kid’s security bears is possibly beyond salvaging. Needless to say Kate has a meltdown while scrubbing organic peanut butter on the gum-infested bear. Organic Peanut Butter you gasp? If Kate says so, darn tootin’ – organic peanut butter. It’s like Windex I guess.
But as funny as it is, it is so reassuring because here she is (in front of cameras!), having the exact reaction I would have (minus the organic peanut butter of course). So real, so human, so incredibly over-the-moon-endearing. I. SIMPLY. LOVE. HER.
Don’t get me wrong, Jon is delightful and certainly those adorable kids are the bread and butter of that show. But Kate, you had me at HELLO. She says that a lot to Jon, who is occassionally unaware of the eight kids in his charge, and it cracks me up every time.
This woman is nothing short of bionic – and not the lame re-make of Bionic Woman either, the original with what’s her name Lindsey Wagner kinda bionic. I’m not totally convince Kate is of this world to be honest. She has endurance I’ve NEVER had, creativity to make Martha swoon and a heart as big as that bigass table they eat at each day.
Do yourself a favor, check this show out. She’ll inspire you to be your real, wonderful self – meltdowns and all. And Kate if you reading this, if I turn out to be half the mom you are (or in my case one-eighth the mom you are) my kid is going to have one heck of a childhood.
Thanks for sharing your life with us.
PS – For those of you worried, the bear did survive, but it still smells of peanut butter and that kid, though secure, is constantly hungry.
*Disclaimer: I make no endorsement for any of TLC’s other products. Apparently that guy from one of those boy bands, you know the one, has teamed up with Scary Spice (or as I call her – Coriander). They plan to SURPRISE you at your place of employment and force you to sing and dance. Any of you with dreams of self-employment, now would be a good time get on that. I myself will be calling in sick indefinitely. Yes people, that is a real show on a real network in America today. Maybe the terrorists have won and no one told us?

I love Jon & Kate plus 8! I cannot believe how organized Kate is! I feel like if I were here I would be a complete mess. I love your take on that singing office show–I was pretty appalled when I saw the commercial for that one!

Kate is truly awesome. I struggle through the day with one and consider myself a survivor. I’d drop dead if someone even asked me to watch 8 kids for an hour let alone forever.

I absolutely LOVE Jon & Kate Plus 8. I am just in awe of how she manages it all. I also love their relationship. You know that has to be STRESSFUL and yet they make it work. Makes me feel like I have nothing to complain about, only having two children.

Another Jon & Kate addict here. She also cracks me up. She tries to stay so in control, she’s so type A and, yet, the nature of her life is a little chaos. Amazing.

I too became obsessed with this show during the Mother’s Day marathon. I was in the hospital waiting to have my second baby and it totally put my fears of taking care of 2 kids at ease. Until they went to Utah on vacation. The stress of that episode actually made my blood pressure go up so much that I had to turn it off.

I watch that show when I can, although my husband can’t stand it. I like watching just to remind myself that no matter how hard I think two is, it could always be worse.
I like how relaxed Jon is. Kate is the mom I could never be – too obsessive-compulsive for me. I admire the way she gets stuff done, but I could never meet her standards.

I have not yet caught this show…but I hear so much about it that I suppose I must.
Also, I liked Celebrity Rehab, so if you liked that too, I’ll assume we enjoy the same programming.
And anything that makes me feel like my mom meltdowns are OK is a must-see.

I feel like I’ve been living under a rock! Is this what a 1-year old does to you? It’s like I missed the most recent copy of US Weekly or something. I have at least heard of the show but I’ve never watched it. It can’t be real, 8 kids and still sane? Perhaps you just think it’s real like MTV likes to make you think The Hills is “real”! I’ll have to check it out because I definitely need another reality show to add to my endless list of glut.
By the way, I found you through your previous poster, Brooke. Your writing just cracks me up so I thoroughly enjoy reading you. Thanks for offering to add me to your list of favorties too.

Just added you to my blogroll! I found you through All Mediocre. LOVE your blog.
And, I too heart Jon and Kate…Although I agree with many others who say they could never come close to the bar that she raises. Anytime a marathon comes on, though? I’m all over it.

I had twins in January and Kate is everything I wish I could be as I try to survive with just half the number of children she has. If only I could reach that level of calm and organization. Superstar, I tell ya.

Kate is my BFF but she doesn’t know it yet.
I love you too!

ooo…i know. she makes it seem do-able.
and then i encounter meltdowns with my two children and realize that i could NEVER do it.
but…
she does have someone fold her laundry for her. now, if we all had someone like that…maybe the world would be a better place.

I’ve only caught the show a few times, but it *is* addicting…even Mr Blue got sucked in! I have to admit, Jon cracks me up. Sometimes he reminds me of that one Simpsons where Homer is naming his kids and he calls them “Bart, Other Bart, and the One Who Can’t Talk”.
I bow before Kate and her ability to not totally lose her mind with 8 kids. Have they ever said what she did before having the kids? She must have been some sort of manager or something…she’s got the skills for it!
Every time I watch the show I vow to become more organized – I think that’s the key. That and trusting her twins to help her out – she gives them just enough responsibility that they can feel good about helping and not get overwhelmed themselves.

always home and uncool
I’ve seen this show a few times and, maybe its what little testosterone I have kickin’ in, but I think Jon deserves some applause for putting up with her at times. She gets wacky on him — from what I’ve seen some of it is within reason, but some of it is her just being anal IMO — but the man doesn’t seem to be a slacker. But I’ve only seen a few eps, so call me on this if I’m wrong.
Personally, I prefer Little People, Big World.

Hi, I found your blog out of a shared obsession with Jon and Kate plus 8. I say almost daily that Kate and I could be best friends. There is something so endearing about her candor in front of the camera. I applaud her for not only doing what she does, but being willing to be in front of the entire world doing it! I don’t know if I would be that brave.
Ok…the Jon and Kate Plus 8 marathon is back from commercial…

@always home and uncool – I definitely get where you’re coming from and Jon does deserve his share of the kudos (also, I share your interest in the Little People). I think, though, that Kate appeals to other women because she isn’t perfect. We get wacky on our partners too and secretly feel bad about it, so knowing that she does too makes us feel better about ourselves. We like Kate because she’s real, and her relationship with Jon is real, and knowing that they can make it through the day helps us think “maybe I won’t drive my car off a bridge today because at least I don’t have EIGHT KIDS and I guess things aren’t as bad as they COULD BE!”

She seriously amazes me. What is most cool, is she isn’t trying to amaze anyone. She is just trying to survive like the rest of us. Which is pretty darned cool . . .

I, too, am addicted. I am always DVR-ing it now. The kids, my kids (not Kate’s) are always laughing at me for watching, but do they get up…nope..they sit and watch as well.
And the Singing show….scary indeed.

I’m always amazed at how she looks so pulled together in her appearance. I look like hell most days of the week and I swear she looks more polished with each passing season.

I Love Love Love this show….I want her hair..in fact, I am styling it like hers. I just need mine a little shorter. That bubblebum episode cracked me up. I Love Jon. He is so patient with her. I am hooked on this show. Kate is so inspiring. Thanks for posting this….

My husband and I LOVE this show! Kate is Wonder Woman, Dyna Girl, and Isis rolled into one freaking fantastic mom. I think about her multiple times a day because my younger son is the same age as her sextuplets. Any time I battle him to brush his teeth/put on shoes/clean up/insert any activity here, I think to myself, “Dang, that Kate has to do this six times over. She is a saint, and I suck.” I worship her. An Jon is a riot. My husband can relate to him oh so well.

I LOVE that show! I just saw on BlogHer that you too are staying at the hostel, thought we should communicate. I don’t know how many conference goers are staying at the hostel, but it might be a good idea to stick together if we can, don’t you think? (I also booked the bed online, I hate arranging things over the phone)

Oh, me too! If I had eight kids I’d be waaaay more anal that Kate…I watch sometimes (cuz, you know, its a show I can watch with the kiddos that doesn’t involve a monkey who wears boots or a guy who thinks he has fairies living in his backyard) and think – “Woman! Give it a rest!!!” Then I stop and wonder what institution would take me if I had sextuplets. I have a DVR subscription to J&K+8!

I totally agree with you. I love her because she knows she’s on film but she doesn’t try to put on any airs or false fronts. One time she commented in an interview about how loud John was breathing. I couldn’t believe it and totally cracked up. I want to be her best friend.
PS. AllMediocre sent me this way!

I have a love affair with J/K plus 8 as well. My favorite line from Kate pretummy tuck (which I use often when referring to my stomach) is JOWLS OF A DOG.
